New reference points

Article Abstract:

Bloomsbury Publishing was set up in 1986 and has since performed well. The company has made an agreement with Microsoft for the production of electronic reference material, and is establishing a US subsidiary which is to launch a range of books. The company has been reorganized into two divisions, reference and trade. Database compilation is becoming more important for the reference section, while the trade section has rights to a number of best sellers. The company's profit is forecast at 1.6 million pounds sterling for 1998 by Beeson Gregory.

Book value

Article Abstract:

Quarto is a UK book publisher which has seen a 25% rise in orders for the company's UK co-edition activities. Quarto benefits from such contracts since production starts after enough publishers have ordered titles. The company also produces greetings cards, prints and posters which represent 40% of sales. Net debt represents 87% of shareholders' funds, but debt is likely to be reduced in 1995 as the need for working capital is reduced. The company's shares are recommended for investors in Mar 1995.

Carnell: feast or famine

Article Abstract:

Carnell is a UK book publisher which sells by mail order. The company faces competition, and has had to move to direct mail rather than newspaper advertising, a lower-margin form of advertising. Carnell is faced by stricter controls from the UK Advertising Standards Authority and this affects claims made over titles such as their ability to help readers to become rich. The company has 95 titles including a guide to self healing and a guide to cats.
