Making design an issue at the MoMA

Article Abstract:

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) director Terrence Riley hopes to make design an issue once again at the MoMA. Riley firmly believes that the issues that drive design are the same issues that drive architecture. He sees a need to update the museum's visual presentation to achieve equal emphasis on populism and academic credibility. His initial efforts were focused on contextualization of furniture exhibits with period drawings and photographs. He also plans to utilize audio commentaries to help explain design concepts of the objects on exhibit.

The Tel Aviv opera House, originally to be designed by Israeli architect Yaco Rechter, will also be designed by London-based furniture designer and architect Ron Arad. Their contrasting styles led to a compromise that permits Ron Arad to design an 'island' inside the building, complete with bars, bookstore, box office, restaurant and small auditorium.

Muji: the shop with no name

The range of goods called Mujirushi Ryohin, meaning 'no Brand Name,' was initiated by the Japanese Corporation Seibu-Saison and led to the Muji company. The company, run by designers who use the concept of simplicity in their design philosophy to cover products, packaging and interior setting, is now influencing designers in the UK and the west.
