Markstrat 3

Article Abstract:

Markstrat 3 is an updated version of a computer-based marketing strategy simulation which has been widely-used since the 1970s. It is expensive, but it has the same benefits as earlier versions in that it promotes appreciation of the long-term view and of the importance of attention to detail. It is much easier to use than earlier versions as access is now through Windows rather than DOS. This facilitates a number of activities including network operation and copying between applications. The manuals are also more user-friendly.

Product variety and firm survival in the microcomputer software industry

Article Abstract:

An analysis of product variety and scope economies in the microcomputer software industry are provided by using detailed firm-level and product-level information on firms' bundling functionalities over application categories and computing platforms. It is found that the management of product variety through the way different application categories are integrated in products and the platforms on which these products are offered could be as important as the significance of scope economies at the more aggregated firm level.
