New objectives in the frame

Article Abstract:

There is much emphasis on the issue of internal control in businesses in the US, which has led to the passing of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977, to recommendations made by the National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting (Treadway Commission), and very recently, to a study prepared by the Committee of Sponsoring Organization of the Treadway Commission and Coopers and Lybrand's Management Consulting Services. This study proposes a single definition of internal control and presents a set of criteria that management can use to measure controls of a comprehensive internal control framework. These include the defining of corporate objectives, effective assessment of risk, the setting up of information systems and control procedures, and the management of change. The US study may help British directors and senior managers evaluate how well their own companies are being controlled.

Councils give computer security low priority

Article Abstract:

The UK loses over one billion pounds sterling annually to cover computer misuse costs in local government and industry. According to a report by the National Computing Center, local governments have insufficient information technology (IT) security measures, compared to private corporations. Despite knowledge of IT security issues, 29% of the local governments surveyed suffered logical security breaches, while 40% suffered physical security breaches. Disciplinary measures for IT security violations were also lax, which may be accounted for by ignorance of the Computer Misuse Act of 1990.
