Measures in the public interest

Article Abstract:

Full Cost Accounting and Indicators of Government Financial Condition are two research studies that pertain to the development of measures needed to evaluate accountability and performance in two major concerns in society. These concerns are government spending and environmental impact. The reports delve into the lack of methods to measure, identify and valuate environmental impacts as well as the minimal availability of traditional transaction-based accounting systems in the normal commercial sense. Moreover, the government's financial condition is measured according to its sustainability, flexibility and vulnerability.

Preserving public confidence

Article Abstract:

Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants Chmn Peter Held told accountants in Toronto, Ontario, that they must take steps to improve their profession so that lawsuits do not continue to escalate. Held recommended that firms stop charging low audit fees and reaching quick out-of-court settlements, and instead begin to produce more skeptical and informed auditors, develop universal standards for management controls, and clarify the profession's boundaries. Held also recommended that corporations screen clients and emphasize their professional qualities over their business goals.

Unsung T1 heroes

Article Abstract:

Income tax clinics for the elderly and low income have been in existence in Canada for the past 20 years. The free service aids the handicapped, elderly, blind and those with incomes of between $15,000 and $25,000 per year. All chartered accountants participating in the program say that the experience of helping others has brought more to them than the clients they serve. Upwards of some 4,000 chartered accountants and accounting students donate their time to help file some 30,000 returns per year.
