Asian funds have performed well in 1999 and the best performers have easily given returns of 40%. Investors wo entered this market in 1998 when prices were low can be content, but longer term investors may be less content due to the poor performance over three and five years. The Far East sector, not including Japan, covers a wide range of markets, so it is not easy to compre similar funds. The markets in the sector have very different growth patterns, though a common factor is an inflationary peak in 1998, and a drop in interest rates thereafter.

This can create conflicts of interest especially when the trusts try to reconstruct prior to their final redemption. Buyers should be careful when using this type of investment vehicle.
