Mighty mark dents German earnings: it is not just the strength of the D-Mark against the dollar that is causing Germany companies alarm

Article Abstract:

The Deutschmark is continuing to rise against the dollar and other major currencies, and there are concerns that German companies may have to move their manufacturing overseas to lower cost, weaker currency countries. Jurgen Schrempp, chairman-elect of Daimler-Benz of Germany, has warned that his company's aerospace division will not return to the black unless the dollar appreciates to around 1.60 Deutschmarks. Henkel, a detergent company, and Schering, a pharmaceuticals group, have also warned of detrimental effects.

US dollar: creeping up

Article Abstract:

There are a number of factors likely to affect the performance of the US dollar in 1996, argues American Express Bank. This makes assessment difficult, but there appear to be some key factors. These include investments in Japanese yen, and long term interest rates after inflation for the German mark in relation to the US dollar. The US trade deficit also appears to be improving, which is likely to mean a slow rise for the dollar in 1996.
