Math counts

Article Abstract:

The Quebec Court of Appeal has ruled that a mathematical error made by an accountant could produce a liability, without discussing whether the error was a result of negligence. It was decided that, as the accountant's client had been entitled to rely fully on him, any further consideration of the scope of the mandate given to the accountant was invalid.

Adviser relationships

Article Abstract:

Accountants who offers a variety of services including financial investments, tax planning and accounting should be aware of the laws for these practices to avoid litigation and liability suits. An analysis of lawsuits filed against different accounting firms indicated frequent occurrence of fiduciary cases or breach of contract resulting from the ignorance and neglect of the firms. Although the courts concluded that since the relationship was motivated by trust and confidence, the firms still had to pay for damages.
