Mobile telecoms: mobiles march on in Austria

The Austrian government is seeking an investor to acquire a minority stake in Mobilkom Austria, the government owned operator of mobile services. The government is likely to find a number of interested buyers. The company holds a monopoly in the Austrian telecoms services market and has 350,000 subscribers, with the market forecast to rise ot some 1.5 million subscribers by 2000. Max.Mobil, which starts operations in Jul 1996, faces a drop in call tariffs from Mobolkom Austria on that day.

People's Phone: upwardly mobile

Article Abstract:

People's Phone plans a share offer in 1996 in order to fund expansion. The company is the biggest independent provider of cellular phones in the UK, and aims to raise around 30 million pounds sterling through the share offer. This would allow 25 million pounds sterling of debt to be wiped out. The company holds a 7% stake in the UK market and has incurred investment costs to achieve this stake. The company both sells handsets and provides a mobile phone service.

Olivetti: ring of good news

Article Abstract:

Olivetti has seen a rise in the company's share price following news that a consortium in which Olivetti holds a stake is functioning. The consortium, Omnitel, also includes Bell Atlantic and Pacific Telesis, and is a mobile phone operator representing the only competition for Stet in Italy. Olivetti's rights issue was also well received by the market and this should help with funds for investing in cellular telephony, in addition to restructuring.
