Article Abstract:
The UK has been lagging behind other European countries in terms of waste management. However, external pressure and an increasingly environmentally conscious electorate have compelled the British government to introduce a wide array of programs and incentives encouraging consumers, businesses and local authorities to participate in environmental protection. Although late by a year, the UK will also begin implementing the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) pursuant to the EC Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive of 1994. It is the country's first law to require businesses to begin recovering and recycling their waste. However, the business sector is not enthusiastic about recycling. Many companies are concerned about such issues as the quality and cost of recycling material, as well as the demand for these products.
