The price tag of our generosity

Article Abstract:

There is reason to suggest that Canadians get very little in return for the taxes that they pay. According to economist William Watson, Canada is not better off than the US when it comes to implementation of social policies such as education and elder care. This despite pronouncements that Canadians are more generous and socially just than Americans. While it is true that Canadians pay as much as 20% more in income tax than Americans, the latter are able to accomplish more social programs with less budget. Canada's politicians are obviously not doing a good job despite the resources that they have.

The fate of Montreal

Article Abstract:

Zagat is one of the most highly respected restaurant guides in North America, but although there are about 40 Zagat guides available for every major North American city, none exists for Montreal, Quebec. This may be attributed to the fact that Montreal, which has been a city of great restaurants for decades, is economically troubled. The most likely cause, however, is language. Montreal gourmets simply dispense with an English-language restaurant guide in the belief that it cannot be as good as a French-language one.
