Moveable memorials?

Article Abstract:

There are an increasing number of imitations of architect and sculptor Maya Lin's Vietnam War Memorial, in the form of portable, temporary walls of silkscreened aluminum, steel and fiberglass. These copies commercialize the attention that people give to memorials. The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Exhibit 'Habitat,' organized by Chuck Zelher and owned by Service Corp International, is meant to be a service to those who cannot afford a Washington visit to see the real monument.

The incredible lightness of being Ingo

Article Abstract:

Lighting designer Ingo Maurer believes that becoming apprenticed to a typographer at the age of 15 allowed him to gain discipline and taught him how to look. His early experiences of typography developed into a strong attraction to paper, which remains his favourite medium. He avoids analyzing his work, and prefers to enjoy the subconscious process of creating. He attended church regularly as a child, and has drawn on Catholic imagery throughout his career.

Material world

Article Abstract:

A 100-item exhibition of Japanese textiles at the Museum of Modern Art called 'Structure and Surface: Contemporary Japanese Textiles,' reveals the unusual microarchitecture of Japanese fabric design. The designs include a cloth which appears to move like sea creatures, a cloth which appear to have red worms. Other textiles are slippery, pleated, diaphanous, metallic, or even have bits and pieces of rubbish such as barbed wires and nails.
