Mullen: 313-vessels fleet means $13.5 billion a year

Adm. Michael Mullen, chief of US naval operations plans in 2006 to increase the present 281-ships fleet to 313 vessels in coming years that imply increasing the shipbuilding budget to a $13.5 billion annual average. Adm. Michael Mullen has also called the warship builders to further modernize their yards so that costs of ships decline and the 313-ship plan remains affordable.

SecNav says weapons budget share shrank

Navy Secretary Gordon England reported that the share of Navy budget directed towards weapons procurement, and the number of ships, submarines and aircraft that Navy plans to buy has declined. He noted that personnel costs have shot up to consume 60 percent of the navy budget, including retiree costs.
