New Zealand: no going back

Article Abstract:

The New Zealand stock market tends to be largely ignored by major global investment houses. Foreign investors have still become increasingly important in New Zealand's financial markets and foreign investors have taken an interest in New Zealand's elections of 1996. The election results have not resulted in an outright winner, but reforms to open New Zealand's market, keep inflation low, and maintain a budget surplus do not appear threatened. Share prices have risen by some 4% in 1996, but foreign investors have also benefited from a strong New Zealand currency.

No takers

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian stock market has been affected by political uncertainty and the weakness of the Indonesian rupiah. The government has not implemented reforms that it had agreed to carry out when an aid package was negotiated with the International Monetary Fund. The government faces re-election, and President Suharto's family and friends' business interests would be hit by the reforms. There is a need for reforms to be implemented rapidly, and the rioting that has occurred in Indonesia shows the urgency of the need.

FT-SE Mid 250 index

Article Abstract:

The FT-SE Mid 250 has performed better than the FT-SE 100 in early 1996, for a number of reasons. Cyclical stocks are performing well, and tend to form a larger proportion of the FT-SE Mid 250, and bid speculation has also helped boost the price of these shares. There are also more shares seen as having long-term potential for growth in the FT-SE Mid 250. It is not clear whether prices for these shares will continue to rise, even if the favorable environment continues.
