New broom in Spain

Article Abstract:

The new Spanish government elected in 1996 has replaced heads of a number of major companies and has announced new plans for privatizations. The Madrid stock exchange is performing well and the government sees this as an opportunity for carrying out privatizations. Companies likely to be first affected are those where there is already a large stake held by the private sector, such as Telefonica and Repsol. Spain has tended to have a good record for privatizations and this should also help the sales.

Sucralose -- a new artificial sweetener

Article Abstract:

The FDA has approved the non-nutritive sweetener sucralose. Sold under the trade name Splenda, it can be used in baked goods and as a table sugar substitute. It is a derivative of sucrose, which is the name for normal table sugar, but it is 300 to 1,000 times sweeter. It tastes like sugar, but only 11% to 27% is absorbed by the body. The rest is excreted. Studies have shown that sucralose has few side effects but its long-term safety in humans is unknown.
