New environmental insurer may add to coverage options

Alexander & Alexander Services Inc has formed Environmental Protection Insurance Co (EPIC) under provisions of the Risk Retention Act. Membership is open to companies subject to losses due to sudden, gradual, or accidental environmental damages. EPIC is said to offer protection to a broader-based group of companies than National Union, another source of environmental impairment liability (EIL) insurance. Companies seeking EIL insurance through EPIC have to undergo a risk assessment that focuses on: the quantity and level of toxicity in materials handled, management practices and policies, physical site characteristics, and prior claim experience.
