Many banks and building societies have again reduced the variable interest rates payable on their savings accounts, and rates are expected to continue to fall. Fixed rates are currently lower than variable savings rates, but they could soon be higher. With variable-rate savings accounts, higher interest is paid if instant access is not required. The mosts competitive savings rates are not necessarily at high street building societies and banks, better rates are often offered by new entrants to the savings market and on accounts run over the telephone or by post.
