OSHA's rogues gallery

Article Abstract:

A compilation of the worst offenders of worker safety, based on the records of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is presented. While many of the worst worker safety offenders are in manufacturing, an increasing number of large retailers are also moving up the list, prompted by worker accidents in their warehouses and distribution units. OSHA's records from Jan. 1, 1995 to the second quarter of 1997 showed automobile manufacturer General Motors as the worst offender, with 867 violations, 273 inspections and penalties amounting to $800,951.

Swiss pharmaceutical leader Novartis was acknowledged for gaining the highest statistics in nine out of ten of the categories. The study has prompted other firms to emulate the leading firms' plans with about 63% wanting to improve employee participation in 1998.

Unprotected sex

Article Abstract:

Risk managers, treasurers and CFOs can be protected from sexual harassment lawsuits by implementing a good corporate policy against the practice. Such policies help decrease the risk by proving to the court that the company is strongly discouraging sexual harassment in the workplace, thereby proving that the company is not guilty of having a hostile environment for female workers.
