Some companies are finding that on-line information services, especially electronic newsclipping services, improve their competitive edge and reduce their research expenses. The systems can be accessed with a computer, modem, communications software and telephone, for a fee of not usually more than a few hundred dollars a year plus access charges. Services of databases provided by five Canadian and five international vendors are described. The databases can access information from newspapers, newswires and magazines, as well as trademark and patent updates.

Graphic user interface (GUI) will dominate computer applications by the end of the 1990s. Accounting firms are slow to make the transition, because they are comfortable with DOS and hesitate to invest the expense on new hardware and employee retraining required for GUI. GUI also can cause data loss and slow networking. Accounting firms Price Waterhouse and KPMG Peat Marwick Thorne have begun to convert from DOS to GUI, however, and the benefits they cite include networking and task switching capabilities, improved presentation, and easier training.
