Organic versus conventional grain production in the mid-Atlantic: an economic and farming system overview

Article Abstract:

Organic rotation farming system yields economic gains that are comparable to the conventional farming system. A study conducted at Rodale Institute Research Center analyzed the cost, labor requirements, crop yield and net economic returns of the conventional and the organic, low-input cash grain farming systems. Results show that organic rotation requires lower expenditures hence leading to higher economic profit. However, the system demands more family labor and management skills. Also, as farm size increases, the advantages of organic rotation become less visible.

Minnesota extension agents' knowledge and views of alternative agriculture

Article Abstract:

Interviews with extension agents in Minnesota about their knowledge of alternative agriculture reveals commonly held economic and environmental goals between county extension agents and supporters of sustainable farming groups. Many feel that agriculture is already making headway towards the goal of sustainable agriculture and are somewhat doubtful about the viability of alternative agriculture. Extension agents also differ with sustainable agriculture supporters on the issue of the number of family farms.
