Painting it green by the numbers

Article Abstract:

The first European Conference on Design for the Environment attempted to formulate guidelines that would help designers and manufacturers come up with more environmentally-friendly products. Discussions regarding life-cycle analysis of methods and materials were the focus of the conference. Two such systems are presented, each assigning a numerical weight to the various components of a product that represents the environmental impact of each, allowing evaluation of their environmental impact before production starts. Such proactive design methods would allow designers to make a positive contribution to environmental initiatives.

Borek Sipek's Bohemian rhapsody

Article Abstract:

Pres Vaclav Havel commissioned Czech designer Borek Sipek to redecorate Prague Castle in 1991. Sipek is well-known as an international designer and his work departs radically from all the tenets of industrial design. He has created a master plan for the redecoration of Prague Castle. Design, in a newly-democratized nation such as Czechoslovakia, could be used to assert national identity, but Sipek's style is international in nature. Work at Prague Castle should be complete by 1993, although lack of funds could prove problematic.
