From punch cards to microchips

Article Abstract:

Accountants traditionally have been quick to adapt innovations in data processing to their profession. The beginning of the automation of the accounting profession dates from the late 19th century and the use of a punch card system to tabulate the 1890 US census. The system made the Census quicker, more accurate, and more meaningful. The tabulating machine used for the system was designed by Herman Hollerith, and his company, the Tabulating Machine Company, eventually became International Business Machines through mergers. IBM was one of the great innovators in the field of electronic digital computers, which have revolutionized the accounting profession in the areas of handling and storage of data, speed of calculations, and communications.
