Philip Morris

Article Abstract:

Philip Morris faces pressure from legal actions involving tobacco but profit from the sale of tobacco products has increased. The company's food operations are becoming more efficient and are taking up efficiency improvements already implemented in the tobacco arm. Philip Morris' brewing business has performed less well and a move is under way to improve this. Senior management has undergone changes and is likely to strengthen a tougher stance with regard to brewing.

Marston, Thompson and Evershed: a costly tune

Article Abstract:

Marston, Thompson and Evershed is a UK brewer which acquired the Piano and Pitcher chain of pubs in May 1996. The company paid 20 million pounds sterling for seven pubs based in London, England, and three development sites. Marston lacks experience in the theme pub market where competition is intense. The company plans to expand theme pubs in large towns outside London. Marston's core business is brewing and there is also strong competition in this market.
