Surf's up

Article Abstract:

A great deal of information is available on the internet for those wishing to buy personal financial products without coming into contact with salesmen. Comparisons of products can be made using data from the internet, though online buying is not always permitted, with most providers citing regulatory constraints. Investors can explore providers' sites once they have selected products. Security concerns are less important than previously with providers imposing security hurdles.

Homing in

Article Abstract:

The internet can be used to find a mortgage, and there is a wider range of mortgages on offer than previously. Comparisons between mortgages can be made easily using data from the web, and online ready reckoners are available to calculate repayments. Eligibility can also be determined for self-employed people and others who may have non-standard status requirements. Interactive Investor, MoneyeXtra and Moneynet all offer useful sites, and there is also a link to a conveyancing site from Moneynet.

Playing away from home

Article Abstract:

British investors have been attracted to US stocks due to the price rises that they have undergone, especially Nasdaq stocks. They may also believe that enough data is available on US and European stocks from the internet to suffer few disadvantages by investing abroad. There are still benefits enjoyed by native investors who can visit the companies concerned. Non-residents can open accounts with US brokers, while E Trade plans a service for investors in foreign stocks. Costs are also likely to drop when US holdings can be settled using the Crest system.
