Playing it safe by the EC rules

Article Abstract:

Companies operating within the EC must take note of a new set of legal obligations pertaining to employee health and safety as a consequence of the laws passed in accordance with the European Directive 90/270 EEC. The EC rules require firms to adopt 'minimum health and safety standards' regarding the use of display screen equipment, particularly visual display units (VDUs). There are three risk areas that employers must plan for: environmental, which has to do with the physical aspects of the work environment; psychosocial, which may include the build up of work-related stress and tiredness; and physiological, which may be classified into visual or musculo-skeletal problems. Employers are obligated to evaluate workstations in terms of their effects on the health of employees.

How safe is your monitor?

Article Abstract:

Research studies show that computer monitors may be hazardous to health of a user. Computer vision syndrome (CVS), cumulative trauma disorders and radiation are three types of health problems attributed to computer monitors. CVS problems could be reduced by use of monitors with an antiglare monitor. Badly designed office furniture could cause ergonomic related problems. Ill effects of radiation from monitors is still a controversial issue. New designs are being developed, and federal regulations are being made.
