Article Abstract:

The recent Department of the Environment (DoE) appointment of Tony Travers and reappointment of five commissioners to the UK Audit Commission for Local Authorities in England and Wales has caused controversy in the local government. Shelve relocation plans audit watchdog is told

Article Abstract:

The Public Accounts Commission (PAC) recommends that the UK National Audit Office (NAO) should postpone its plans to relocate to Bristol and Leeds. The relocation plan, which depended mostly on the sale of a piece of its present headquarters in London, was shelved due to the downturn in real estate prices. The plan was conceived by the NAO and approved by the PAC in Dec 1990 to make the NAO more accessible to its clients who planned to transfer to Leeds and Bristol.

Commission warns of care reform chaos

Article Abstract:

UK's Audit Commission for Local Authorities for England and Wales warns in a report that the planned community care changes could result in confusion. The health care reforms, which are scheduled to be fully enforced in Apr 1993, will involve the transfer of social security funds to county councils. The Audit Commission further suggests that health authorities devise ways to effectively manage and deploy the funds to prevent their use for other purposes.
