Time out for good behavior

Article Abstract:

The Buffalo Zoological Gardens in Buffalo, NY instituted a behavior enrichment program for its captive wild animals in 1996. The program is intended to benefit the animals psychologically by stimulating them to engage in natural wild behaviors, such as hunting, play and food gathering. Keepers have ingeniously devised a variety of structures, apparatus and other stimuli for the animals that encourage appropriate behaviors, engage their minds, occupy their time and alleviate their boredom. The program is also very popular with zoo visitors, who enjoy watching the animals simulate wild behaviors.
