Potential of storm, terrorist disruptions to shipyards long established

Article Abstract:

The potential of storms, labor disputes, terrorist acts and more to disrupt shipyards was established long back in 1996 by a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report which presciently set forth the risk of disruptions striking shipyards confined to a single region. The report had noted that shipyards could have their operations disrupted by natural disasters, industrial accidents, worker strikes, employee sabotage, terrorist attacks, or severe financial difficulties.

DD(X) destroyer board review postponed to reconcile figures

Article Abstract:

A Defense Acquisition Board (DAB) review of the DD (X) destroyer has been postponed to reconcile different figures on the destroyers, which were complied by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Navy. The extra time will help the department to take a second look at the comparative figures on the next-generation destroyer program and also compare the estimates between the Navy numbers and the DOD numbers.

New technology absorbs carbon dioxide to save sailors' lives

Article Abstract:

Naval Sea Systems Command ordered lithium hydroxide curtains for $850,000 from Battelle that could help save sailors' lives if their submarine is disabled. The Navy hopes to equip every submarine in the fleet by late 2004 with 400 of the life-saving curtains that work by having lithium hydroxide absorb carbon monoxide from the air while the sailors await rescue.
