Powering the 21st-century fleet

Article Abstract:

Contemporary warships feature segregated propulsion and AC electric power distribution systems which suffer from serious flaws despite the fact that they generally work well and are reliable. The most significant of these is the inability of such systems to maintain power continuity when and immediately after a ship suffers a hit. Rather then relying on the many short term, band-aid-type approaches that are being used to solve the drawbacks of these systems, the development of an integrated fight-through power system may be the ideal solution for improving the performance of fleet units.

Beluga: Soviet Project 1710 submarine-laboratory

Article Abstract:

Soviet Project 1710 submarine, tagged as the Beluga by NATO, was based on an idea proposed by I.M. Borodenkov and B.F. Dronov in 1960. The idea to use an actual submarine as a laboratory for the design of future Russian submarines became a reality with the approval of the submarine- laboratory's plans in 1962. The Beluga submarine, which is now a part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is presently being considered for new rounds of submarine research work.
