Privatization - new challenges for strategic planning

Article Abstract:

Executives from the private sector who decide to help manage businesses in the public sector need to be aware that the public sector experiences a variety of conflicts, and that management methods used in the private sector need to be adapted for the private sector. Successful executives in the public sector know they must balance the needs of various groups, address conflicts over constraints on revenues, and handle clashes over social viewpoints. Important issues that must be addressed by public sector managers include the motivation of public sector workers and how to make a profit. Suggested methods for the successful management of a public sector organization include cost cutting and uncovering previously unidentified areas that mirror an organization's strong points in order to enhance revenue levels.

The ten commandments of management in effective firms

Article Abstract:

A study of 31 high-performing, top-level managers was undertaken to determine their reasons for success. The results reveal an emphasis on traditional, proactive management concepts such as planning, leadership, and control. The manager's interaction with subordinate employees might be the most important feature of effective management. Other important categories are knowledge of the business, perspective on change, communications, innovation, market orientation, and the ability to assume risks. The behavioral model with emphasis on reactive management is complementary for effective techniques. A dual approach would eliminate some of the confusion about proactive and reactive perspectives.
