Protecting the space environment: are we doing enough?

Article Abstract:

Space professionals should gain more insight on the detrimental effects of space development to preserve the space environment for future generations. Existing space legislations do not seem to properly address this issue. The 1967 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, in particular, contains inadequate provisions to safeguard planetary bodies from generated debris. This aspect of space law will become more critical as the establishment of bases on the moon and Mars are implemented.

Corporate mergers - lifeline for the space industry

Article Abstract:

Competitive market forces in an increasingly global marketplace that have brought about a spate of corporate consolidations have similarly influenced the space industry. Existing major satellite building firms that were spawned from aerospace companies have experienced constant transformation through a series of mergers and acquisitions. This sector is currently experiencing the most broad-based and extensive restructuring in the 1990s, and corporate mergers appear to continue to be accepted as the key to the space industry's survival.

The UK Parliamentary Space Committee: the emergence of a space lobby?

Article Abstract:

The UK Parliamentary Space Committee is the closest thing to a space lobby in Britain. Composed of members of parliament from different political parties and leaders in the UK space industry, it hopes to move the UK government towards giving more attention and funding to the industrialization of space. It also hopes to promote the UK's space interests both within and without the European Space Agency.
