Provincial ventures

Article Abstract:

The venture capital sector of Manchester England is seeing competition increase. The general election of 1997 has led to a reduction in deal numbers relative to 1996, but there are high levels of institutional liquidity which means that venture capitalists are seeking investment opportunities. There have been predictions that prices are peaking which have yet to come true. Universities are seeking to become more commercial and they cannot always attract funding from institutions.

Venture capitalists

Article Abstract:

Venture capitalists in north west England face increased competition from banks and from firms in London, England. They have been criticised for avoiding risk, and competition has made them more likely to accept criticism. Companies operating in the region include 3i, which takes a long-term approach. 3i caters for smaller firms as well as large deals, while Lancashire Enterprises does not have a minimum limit and leads in the small firms sector.

Spirit of adventure

Article Abstract:

The north west of England has seen high levels of private equity investment, but venture capitalists are tending to exit more than they are entering business deals. The economic outlook is uncertain and prices are high, so selling appears attractive. The total value of deals is increasing though numbers are down in 1st half 1998 compared with 1st half 1997. Management buy-ins have seen an increase in value to over double the figure for 1997.
