Race against time

Article Abstract:

ING Barings has warned investors not to consider investing in Asian markets because the economic situation is still too unstable and the region has large foreign debts to repay. The number of expected bankruptcies during 1998 is difficult to estimate. Analysts suggest that major reforms are needed to open up financial markets and reduce government involvement so that free market economics can develop. Reforms are needed rapidly so that countries which have received IMF aid can recover before crises hit China and Hong Kong.

Investment advisers account for some 25% of UK unit trust sales. Commission charges are tending to rise and there is concern that investment advisers may recommend products that are lucrative.
