Tesco eyed at half-time

Article Abstract:

Tesco's share price has performed well in 1995, and the company has seen a rise in volume sales. Tesco's loyalty card is performing well, and the company's high street stores give it an advantage given constraints on out-of-town expansions. The company's profit is forecast at 665 million pounds sterling for the 12 months to Feb 1996 by Robert Fleming. UBS argues in favor of buying Tesco shares, while Robert Fleming rates the shares a hold due to the price having taken into account likely developments.

Bargain basement

Article Abstract:

Kwik Save is a UK discount retailer which has seen a rise in its share price. The company is faced with competition from Aldi and Netto which has affected volume sales. A rise in the company's share price in 1994 followed speculation that Dairy Farm International, which holds a 30% stake in Kwik Save, would increase its stake. The company could be sold by Dairy Farm due to an expectation of flat profits. A bid for Kwik Save is possible and would increase the company's share price.

Storing up trouble

Article Abstract:

The German retailing industry has seen a trend toward consolidation which is continuing in 1995. Asko and Kaufhof are merging to create the biggest retailer in Germany. Metro, a Swiss firm, controls both companies. Kaufhof acquired Horten in 1994. Both Kaufhof and Horten are department store concerns so savings should arise from the merger. There will be fewer savings from the merger with Asko which is a supermarket chain, but tax benefits will be gained.
