Rail supplier goes back on track

LPA produces specialist electrical components like electrical connectors and switchgear, and the company is benefiting from strong demand in from railroad companies carrying out refurbishments. The groups was restructured following the appointment of Peter Pollock as chief executive in 1997, and orders and pre-tax profits have increased. Some 27 billion pounds sterling is to be invested in London Undergound and the Channel Tunnel, and this should ensure work for LPA. The company also benefits from overseas demand.

The company's new management and chairman, Grenville Howard, have attractions for investors due to past performance. Arlen reported a pre-tax profit of 1.2 million pounds sterling for the 6 months to Sep 1994. Arlen aims to expand through acquisition, though at a restrained pace. Arlen's shares are recommended for UK investors in Jan 1995.

Arlen: shell that suits

The company has yet to make an acquisition but has achieved organic growth. Arlen Electrical produces and distributes household appliances using the BG brand and should benefit from a recovery in the UK housing market. Profits rose in 1995 despite a drop in sales. The company has funds for acquisitions and is attractive for investors.
