Report recommends ban of US GM maize in Mexico

Article Abstract:

The problematic regulatory and cultural gaps between US and Mexico was pointed out by a report on the possible effects of GM maize from the US on maize and other native plants in neighboring Mexico. Other recommendations in the report include the need to find better ways of conserving Mexican maize and teosinte races and to better coordinate biotechnology regulatory policies among Mexican, Canadian, and US governments.

Survey raises concerns about Bt resistance management

Article Abstract:

The National Corn Growers' Association and several companies including Monsanto, sponsored a study conducted by Market Horizons to determine the growing of Genetically modified corn that is resistant to Bacillus thuringensis in order to compel farmers to follow EPA management protocols. Such protocols were established to limit the possibility of insects becoming resistant to Bt.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has agreed to engage in a comprehensive reassessment of all currently registered, commercial varieties of cotton and corn, as a condition of Greenpeace's dismissal of a lawsuit against the EPA.
