Reports and accounts: read between the lines

Article Abstract:

Novice investors should learn to understand corporate accounts which are often presented in a way that misleads stockholders. Investors should assess whether money has been wasted on the presentation of the account since this could reflect waste elsewhere. The outlook statement from the chief executive or chairman should also give clues, and investors should be concerned if it is absent. Directors' pay and stockholdings are also sources of useful information.

Balance sheets: a game of guesswork

Article Abstract:

Corporate balance sheets are an attempt to bring together information on a company's financial position. They include data on assets and liabilities and involve estimates, for example of the value of loans as assets. They provide a snapshot of a company's affairs which could change significantly some three months later. There should be caution when interpreting data on cash and borrowings since companies are reluctant to reveal that they are short of money.

Earnings fears return to centre stage

Article Abstract:

UK profit margins have grown to high levels, but further growth may be difficult from 1995, and long-term growth may drop to an annual level of 7%. Cost reductions and restructuring have brought some gains but there may be limits to these processes. Price competition and rising wages could undermine margins. US companies are still carrying out restructuring, and there may be long-term changes in the labor market which allow for further cost reductions.
