Revealed comparative production advantage: implications for competitiveness in Florida's vegetable industry

Article Abstract:

The degree of competition in the vegetable sector in Florida is evaluated according to criteria incorporated in growth models and the implications of supply responsiveness of commodities to pricing policies. Results show that among vegetable crops, lettuce, strawberries and tomatoes proved to be the most competitive and even demonstrated comparative advantage when measured against vegetable production in other parts of the US. A big determinant for such competitiveness was high yield.
