Riding out the crisis

Article Abstract:

Gowrings combines both dealerships for Ford Motor and Burger King outlets. The company was affected by the mad cow disease crisis in the UK in 1996, but has since recovered in 1997, as shown by its interim results. Both divisions have reported rises in profit and turnover, with the profit rise for the restaurant division at 254%. This means that restaurants are likely to contribute more to profits for full-year 1997. The company could leave the motor business to focus on restaurants, though the activities are seen as complementing one another in some ways.

Ryland: moving up a gear

Article Abstract:

Ryland is a UK car dealer which should begin to improve its profit margins or could be affected by a takeover. The company has moved toward higher margin market such as specialist vehicles and volume car dealing accounts for 43% of gross profit compared to 49% in 1994. The company's profit for 1995 to 1996 was flat and Ryland argues that this is due to acquiring businesses making a loss and improving their performance. The company's profit for calendar 1996 is forecast at 3.5 million pounds sterling by Williams de Broe.

Shining the family silver

Article Abstract:

Frank G Gates is an automobile dealer which has seen a rise in its share price. The company has confirmed that it may sell part of its business. The company's profits fell by nearly 44% to 593,000 pounds sterling in 1st half 1995, and sales also fell, by 7% in this period. The company's assets are an attraction since most of the company's sites are owned on a freehold basis. Ford may not approve of its dealer being involved in multi-franchise operations, but the sites could be sold.
