Riding the trust tiger: despite the bad press, unit trusts remain the most convenient way for non-professional investors to put money into share and bond markets. An with a modicum of research, the risks can be reduced

Article Abstract:

Although units trusts are criticsed for being too high and driven by marketing fashion instead of fundamental investment criteria, they enable investors of modest means to spread their risk, and they can complement a building society account. There are over 1,500 unit trusts offering UK based investment income to capital growth from Malaysia and investors should consider they are seeking a steady flow of income, capital growth or a mixture of income and capital growth, when choosing a unit trust.

Getting stuck in the unit trust quicksands: some unit trusts have been crawling along the bottom of the performance tables for years. Investors need to know when to cut their losses and pull out of irredeemably dud funds

Article Abstract:

Investors should regularly check the performance of unit trusts as some have been at the bottom of the performance table for years. Switching funds will mean an exit charge together with a front end charge for the new fund, but the improved performance should outweigh this. Many people compare unit trust resturns with a building socity or with inflation, but returns can be considerably higher due to the risk, and should outpace inflation in the medium to long term.
