Russia: take your pick

Article Abstract:

Investing in Russia could bring high rewards or losses and uncertainties have not been clarified following an initial round of presidential elections. Some Finance Ministry bonds have been suspended amounting to the value of $100 million since they had been stolen once. This calls into the question the safety of any government debt. Economic growth is likely to be boosted by a victory for Boris Yeltsin but the banking system and ruble could be affected by an increase in investment in Russia and a drop in bond yields.

Margaret Cavendish and patronage

Article Abstract:

Margaret Cavendish (1623-1673) used patronage rituals to establish her status as a natural philosopher at a time when women were not allowed to join the emerging scientific community such as the Royal Society. She donated books to the universities and criticized the ideas of Hobbes, Descartes, Van Helmont and Henry More to get the attention of her peers. At the end, Cavendish was able to rise above the challenges of her time and became the first woman to publish on scientific subjects in English.
