Sage benefits from strong branding, good products, and good incentives for dealers. Upgrades, training, and other add-ons increase sales per customer. The company's earnings for a UK telephone helpline in 1994 totalled 9 million pounds sterling. Improvement potential comes from acquisitions which have been pure software specialists.

Sage: computing power

Article Abstract:

Sage holds a stake of some 60% in the UK accounting software market and sales of new products are growing at 20% annually. More than 50% of the company's UK revenue comes from service support for registered clients, and this has helped the company boost its margins. Sage has acquired three French companies and has taken on a marketing manager which should help sales in France. The company is a strong cash generator, which helps finance acquisitions using debt.

Pegasus: on the wing from unwelcome Sage

Article Abstract:

Pegasus is a UK computer software company which received a bid from Sage but legal advisers decided such a bid would be referred to the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Pegasus has growth potential and could attract another bid. Pegasus' customer base and products are attractive for a buyer and the company also has a cash pile of over 4 million pounds sterling. The company's profit is forecast at 1.3 million ponds sterling for 1996 by Greig Middleton.
