Second time lucky

Article Abstract:

Many companies who buy accounting software for the first time end up acquiring systems that turn out to be unsuited to their needs. Some even end up with systems that are simply unusable. Deception on the part of the salesperson hawking the software is often to blame for these faulty purchases. However, many purchasers are equally to blame since they often fail to adequately check out a system's capabilities. Steps that companies can take to ensure that they select appropriate accounting software would include making a checklist of requirements, asking a staff accountant to carefully evaluate a system's capabilities, and consulting a specialist firm that provides advice on packaged software selection. Companies could also reduce the possibility of error by restricting their purchases to accounting packages that are recognized market leaders such as Multisoft and Pegasus.
