Serious damage

Article Abstract:

Emerging markets are not likely to undergo a rapid recovery from the Oct 1997 stock price fall, according to HSBC James Capel. Eastern Europe has been especially badly hit due to high currency risks and external deficit problems. External deficits are less of a problem in Latin America, where damage has also been less. HSBC James Capel prefers Latin America to Asia although there could still be currency instability in both regions. Real valueis emerging which will less further downside in these markets, though some risks remain.

In the year 2026

Article Abstract:

It is difficult to predict which stocks will perform well over a 30 year period due to the impact of technology. Long-dated UK government securities should be a safe investment if they are index-linked to protect against inflation. They do not have a currency risk for UK investors. Emerging markets can help boost growth and the Foreign and Colonial Emerging Markets is well-established. General Electric Co is a creative company and Shell has a good record of adapting and has a wide range of products.

No place for the impatient investor

Article Abstract:

Emerging markets represent a long-term investment opportunity and there are risks involved. High literacy levels, lower wages, and more space can allow emerging economies to grow rapidly. Sometimes growth rates cannot be sustained and short-term investors encounter problems. Investment in these markets may be suitable when considering investment for children, but nervous investors should avoid emerging markets due to the risk levels.
