Shifting the economic emphasis

Article Abstract:

Pakistani Finance Minister Sartaj Aziz laid out three major targets of Pakistani economic policy in his budget speech in Jun 1997: a 6% increase in GDP, a 7% increase in industrial output, a 6% increase in agricultural output and a 15% increase in exports. Pakistan's problems are severe; industrial production declined by 1.4% in 1996-97, and the country is burdened by $39 billion in foreign debt and $23.8 billion in domestic debt, necessitating an IMF bailout.
