Short-termism: which side are you on?

Article Abstract:

Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte commissioned a survey by MORI of executive and finance directors to represent business and managers and investment analysts to represent the financial community in order to elucidate their views on short-term thinking. Management blames short-term thinking on the UK financial markets. The conflict between management and the financial community is the result of management believing that their shares are undervalued, management's tendency to overestimate the efficacy of their communications with the financial community, and management's view that the financial community focuses on the short-term, an orientation possibly caused by the types of information that the companies give to financial analysts. The accounting profession has been dragged into the short-termism debate on the issue of the importance of major measures of financial performance.

A long, steady innings

Article Abstract:

Auditing Practices Board (APB) Chmn Bill Morrison's experience as a business advisor will help him manage the APB in an effective manner. Morrison believes that auditors should focus on their roles in the financial and commercial environments, their relationship with management, and their relationships with non-executive directors. The problem in the auditing profession is that the profession in based on judgments rather than explicit rules. Critics should not blame auditors for making poor decisions if the auditors did the underlying work properly and reached a decision in a proper manner.
