Slovakia: high unemployment

Article Abstract:

Slovakia: The unemployment rate increased to 19.3% for 1Q 2001. More than 0.5 mil persons were jobless in 1Q 2001. The unemployment rate increased by 3.6% for 1Q 2001 compared to the same period in 2000. Most redundancies were in state institutions and companies. The unempoyment rate in Slovakia is one of the highest in Europe. The output of the Slovak economy rose by 3% for 1Q 2001 compared to 1Q 2000. The average wage in Slovakia is about SOK 10,000, which is about CEK 9,000. The sum is nearly CEK 4,000 lower compared to the Czech Republic.

Bratislava gets up to Prague slowly

Article Abstract:

Slovakia: The Slovak economy should grow by 2.8% in 2001 and by nearly 3.6% in 2002. Slovakia has to face structural problems. It inherited the heavy industry focused mainly on the military sector and semi-products production after the division of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia's second problem is long-drawn-out unemployment, 20%. The total foreign investents have exceeded USD 2 bil in Slovakia, 10% of total foreign investments in the Czech Republic.

The last gold mine in central Europe ends

Article Abstract:

Slovenska banska (Hodrusa-Hamre, Slovakia), gold extraction company, will close the gold mine Rozalie in the summer of 2001. The reason is the unprofitability of further extraction. The closure of the mine will end the extraction of gold in central Europe. About 50,000 t of ore, which was processed to 306 kg of gold, was extracted in the mine in 2000.
