So sue me! Advertisers increasingly file suit to counter negative ads

Article Abstract:

Certain advertisers use negative advertising at the risk of lawsuits and financial loss. For instance, Compaq Computer Corp finally agreed to an out-of-court settlement with archrival Dell Computer Corp after the latter came out with ads bearing false claims. U-Haul International Inc also received $42 million for damages as a result of false advertising claims ran by Jartran Inc. Some say that comparative advertising may enhance productivity and even the Federal Trade Commission believes it promotes consumer awareness.

Small publishers concerned by possible MPA-ABP merger

Article Abstract:

The proposed merger of Magazine Publishers of America and American Business Press concerns some of the smaller publishers. The merger between the two largest trade associations of the magazine industry is hoped to provide negotiating leverage with the Postal Service. The larger publishers want discounted postage rates for magazines with circulations of at least 50,000 presorted on pallets. Some smaller publishers believe that they will lose their identity with the resulting merger.
