South Korean policy failure and the Hwang debacle

Article Abstract:

A project inaugurated officially by South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun in October 2005, embryonic stem cell, pioneer Hwang Woo-Suk, pulled an astonishing feat with the creation of the World Stem Cell Hub. However, it was found that all the 11 claimed cell lines were crude fakes and Hwang committed gross ethical violations in securing egg donations that made South Korea's ambitious cell research program in tatters, cloning king Hwang was dethroned and his paper were retracted.

Navigating an ethical patchwork-human gene banks

Article Abstract:

Collection of genes in the human gene bank has raised several ethical issues over the use of these samples for research. Details of the various ethical issues concerning the gene banks and the various approaches carried out to balance the individual rights with research progress are discussed.

The ethical guidelines of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) enjoin the researchers at all the level to share the research material, data and intellectual property rights. This would help to analyze the public benefits of the research.
