Special effects

Article Abstract:

Personal pensions are likely to be increasingly important, and the usage of specialist funds can make pensions appear less dull. One type of specialist fund is geared to communication and technology stocks and can take advantage of growth areas. These areas may appear volatile, but this is less of a concern for a young investor with some way to go before retirement. Volatility can bring rewards as well as risks. Emerging markets offer another area of potential growth for pension funds.

Free spirits

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom company pension schemes may not provide sufficient cover, especially for people who change jobs frequently or take early retirement. They can make additional voluntary contributions through 'in-house' or 'free-standing' schemes, the latter being arranged by the employees themselves. In-house schemes offer lower charges, but free-standing schemes may be preferred under certain circumstances, such as where specialist investments are required.
